Jorge Palma and the philosopher Eduardo Lourenço discovered in Paris, in the early 1990s, that they had the same motto: “Because of tenderness, I lost my life.” This memory surfaced a few days ago in Lisbon, at the musician’s home, during a conversation with a journalist who had been his personal friend for more than 43 years. This is free Jorge Palma, as always, and probably as amazing as ever. Which sounds “very French” here.

I met Jorge Palma when he was singing in the streets and on the balconies of Paris. It’s been over 40 years and we’ve never lost touch. A week ago, at his house in Lisbon, we spent the afternoon chatting, as only friends do. We talked about the past, of course, about the good old days and others too. We revisit the places and people – from Denmark to Guincho, from Herberto Helder to Arie dos Santos – and the words and moments, like notes and history, that brought him back to music. A conversation about the path taken by one of the greatest Portuguese musicians. And yes, there is still a way.

In the early 1990s, I gave a solo recital at the FNAC Forum des Halles, in central Paris, where I played part of the long and difficult poem “Le Bateau Ivre,” by Arthur Rimbaud, which I had composed. As far as I know, only you and Leo Ferret composed the music. There were many intellectuals in attendance: Eduardo Prado Coelho, Eduardo Lourenço, and I think Eduardo Agualusa as well…
