LinkedIn launches new identity verification and security features for users

LinkedIn introduced new identity verification and online fraud prevention features, including email verification with a security token, partnership with Clear company for biometric identity verification, and employer verification with Microsoft Entra verified ID credentials. All features are free and visible in the user’s profile.

LinkedIn recently announced new features intended to allow millions of members to verify their identities and prevent hackers and online fraud. The platform was already testing the email verification system with a select few employers, but the feature is now available to 50 million members worldwide. With this system, members can confirm their workplace with a security code sent to their professional email.

Additionally, LinkedIn has partnered with biometric verification company Clear which is known as an airport security service. Starting this month, existing Clear members will be able to verify their LinkedIn profile with a phone number, government-issued photo ID and a photo.

Another new offer allows LinkedIn members to verify their employer with verified LinkedIn ID credentials. Sign in to Microsoft. Although this feature launched in 2022, it will be available to more than 2 million LinkedIn members by the end of April, when it becomes available to companies already registered with Entra.

According to Joy Chik, Head of Identity and Network Access at Microsoft, “When you first meet professional contacts online, you need additional trust signals to reinforce your confidence in who they are as they say they are.” Chik suggested that a verified ID could be used during background checks, support calls, and in other scenarios.

All three features are available for free to all LinkedIn members. If you enable any of these, verification details will appear on your LinkedIn profile. “We help give you confidence that everyone who connects with you and the content they find is trustworthy and authentic,” said Oscar Rodriguez, Vice President of Product Management at LinkedIn. While not all users will have access to all features right away, Rodriguez added that “we’ll expand availability and sharing methods over time.”
