Lionel Messi Reflects on Viral Baby Photos With Lamine Yamal Ahead of Historic World Cup Final

Published on

The upcoming FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain will feature more than a battle for soccer’s biggest prize. It will also bring together two generations of football greatness whose connection began nearly two decades ago in an unexpected moment that has since become one of the sport’s most remarkable stories.

Messi and Yamal Reunite on Soccer’s Biggest Stage

Long before Lamine Yamal became one of the brightest young stars in world soccer, he appeared in a charity photo shoot with Lionel Messi as a five-month-old infant in Barcelona in December 2007.

The now-famous photographs show a 20-year-old Messi helping bathe baby Yamal during a charity calendar project organized by Barcelona in partnership with UNICEF and local newspaper Diario Sport. At the time, neither could have imagined that they would one day meet as opponents in a World Cup final.

That unlikely moment will become reality on Sunday when Argentina faces Spain for the championship.

Messi, now 39, is widely expected to be making his final appearance on soccer’s biggest international stage. The Argentine captain will be chasing what would be a fourth World Cup title for his country.

Yamal, 19, has quickly established himself as Spain’s biggest star and one of the sport’s most exciting young talents. His rise at Barcelona has also fueled comparisons to Messi, with many viewing him as the club’s next generational superstar.

Messi Calls the Photos “Crazy”

Speaking Friday in New York, Messi reflected on the extraordinary coincidence that has captured worldwide attention ahead of the final.

“Honestly, that photo of us is crazy, because—well, that’s life, right? I took a photo with him as a baby, and here we both are, facing off in a World Cup.”

Messi also praised Yamal’s rapid development and the impact he has already made despite his young age.

“Lamine is a huge talent, someone I’ve followed a lot because he plays for a club I love and I always wish him the best, I always want the best for him. He’s one of the world’s benchmark players at 19 years old, and he has his whole career ahead of him.”

Messi acknowledged that Yamal has an opportunity to accomplish something historic but made clear Argentina intends to prevent that from happening.

“He has a great opportunity to achieve something historic, which we’ll try our hardest to make sure doesn’t happen this time. I just want to wish him the best.”

He added:

“It’s crazy. He’s one of the best in the world right now, no doubt about it. And I wish him a lot of luck, because what’s good for him will also be good for Barcelona.”

A Story That Captivated Soccer Fans

The photographs have resurfaced repeatedly in recent years as Yamal’s career accelerated. Fans across social media have marveled at the extraordinary odds of Messi appearing alongside Yamal as a baby before eventually facing him in a World Cup final.

While internet users have debated just how unlikely the coincidence is, the sequence of events remains one of soccer’s most remarkable stories.

Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, previously joked that perhaps the famous photo represented the opposite of what many believed.

“Maybe Lamine was giving it to Leo, I don’t know,” Nasraoui told Mundo Deportivo. “For me, my son is the best. In everything.”

How the Famous Photo Was Taken

Photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the images, explained in a 2024 interview that the shoot was part of Barcelona’s annual charity calendar supporting UNICEF and other community organizations.

Monfort recalled that Messi, then only beginning to establish himself with Barcelona’s first team, was naturally reserved during the session.

“I sweated blood to take it,” Monfort said, explaining that Messi was shy and initially unsure how to handle the baby in a small plastic bathtub filled with water.

As the session continued, the interaction became more natural.

“At the start, there was not much interaction. But, bit by bit, it started to happen and in the end, it’s a pretty good photo,” Monfort said.

Looking back, he noted that neither Messi’s legendary career nor Yamal’s future stardom could have been predicted in 2007.

“We are talking about 2007. Messi was only beginning at Barca. Destiny plays an important role in these things.”

Monfort also joked that, despite taking one of soccer’s most iconic photographs, it had not made him financially secure.

“The chances of all this happening was like winning the lottery, although it’s not sorted me out financially for life.”

A Historic Match With a Remarkable Backstory

Although Messi and Yamal have shared many similarities through their Barcelona connections and meteoric rise to global prominence, fate has largely kept them apart throughout their careers.

That changes on Sunday, when the veteran widely regarded as one of the greatest players in soccer history faces the teenager many believe could become the next defining star of the sport. Their unforgettable photograph from 2007 has already become part of soccer history, but their first meeting on the field will add another memorable chapter as Argentina and Spain compete for the World Cup title.
