Lisbon closes the carnival in the red despite BCP-Bolsa shining

Published on

The national stock exchange ended the carnival day slightly lower despite the fact that BCP closed at its highest level since August 2019. Heavyweight juggler Jeronimo Martins ended up pulling PSI into the red.

On a day of low trading volume due to Carnival, the Portuguese stock exchange closed again in the red, with the PSI falling 0.1% to 6,014.28 points. Lisbon followed the losses of the main European markets, with five of the 15 included in the main national index finishing with a positive balance, nine with declines and CTT closing unchanged.

Mota-Engil led the declines, falling by 4.25% to 1,846 euros, followed by heavyweight Jerónimo Martins, which fell 2.93% to 19.53 euros, and then Galp, which lost 2.48% to close at 11.42 euros, its lowest value in three months. Sonae lost 1.08%, ending the day at €1.004.

Losses, mainly by Jerónimo Martins and Galp, prevented a positive balance for PSI. This is despite BCP gaining 2.95%, which closed at €0.2156, the highest level since August 2019. The Miguel Maia-led bank benefited from an upward revision of the “target” and recommendation by Credit Suisse.

Also on the positive side, the EDP family stands out. EDP Renováveis advanced 0.5% to 20.14 euros, while the parent company rose 2.33% to 4.828 euros, the highest level since January 13.
