Lobster Woman (103) refuses to quit

Virginia Oliver is a local legend in the US state of Maine, where she has been catching crabs since she was eight years old.

The reason this is so special is because Oliver is 103 years old. She has now begun her 95th season of lobster fishing, according to reports Washington Post.

For the past 95 years, Oliver has been following the same morning routine. She puts on her red lipstick, puts on her fishing outfit, and just before dawn she gets on her boat.

Over the next few hours, she releases her lobster stones into the sea. She’s doing so this summer, too, even though she hit 103 on June 6.

– I’ve done this my whole life, and never get seasick, Oliver tells The Washington Post.

Documentary and children’s book

In 2021, when Oliver turns 101, a documentary about her life is made. The movie is called Conversations with the Lobster Lady.

Oliver’s youthful spirit and dedication to catching lobster even inspired a children’s book, The Lobster Lady: The 102-Year-Old Legend of Maine, which was published last year.

The lady from Rockland, Maine is seen by the locals as a celebrity, because of all the media attention she has received.

Her friends call her “Jenny”, but most people in the area know her as “The Crab Woman”.

“dangerous profession”

Crab fishing is not rated as the easiest occupation, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

They refer to lobster fishing as a “dangerous occupation” because of the risk of ending up at sea and getting caught in lobster stones.

The fact that the job is so risky has never stopped Oliver before, and she has no intention of giving up completely just yet.

– I intend to do this until I die. Oliver says it’s important to keep moving.

Fishing with father and brother

Oliver knows hardly anything but lobster hunting in her work life, which she started with her older brother and their father.

– We go to the sea every day, says Oliver.

Her father was a lobster fisherman who ran a general store on a large island called “The Neck” off the coast of Maine. When he had to give up lobster fishing, Jenny took over as the ship’s captain.

After 95 years, she is still out at sea catching lobsters, and is believed to be the oldest lobster fisherman in the world.

Family business

The 103-year-old has four children, three of whom have pursued a career as a lobster fisherman, and she has two grandchildren.

For 61 years, Oliver worked with her husband, Max Oliver, until his death in 2006.

Since then, Oliver’s son, Max Jr. (age 80) has been by her side on the boat. During high crab season (usually from June to September), Oliver and his son go out to sea three times a week.
