Man arrested after Ai Weiwei sculpture destroyed at Italian exhibition

ShA 57-year-old Czech man was arrested on Friday after destroying a sculpture by Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei at the opening of an exhibition in Bologna, Italy.

CCTV footage posted by Ai Weiwei on social media site Instagram shows the man pushing the structure, called the “porcelain cube”, and holding a piece above his head, before being intercepted.

The man was already known in the art world for similar works, said Arturo Galanzino, the exhibition's curator.

“Unfortunately, I know the author of this reckless gesture through a series of disturbing and destructive events over the years, which have involved various galleries and institutions in Florence,” Galanzino said.

The official said the exhibition opened normally on Saturday and that the statue would be replaced with a life-size print.

It is not known how the man entered the building, as the event held on Friday was for guests only.
