Microsoft is set to release a new version of Teams next month, which has been rebuilt from the ground up to dramatically improve system resource usage on desktops and laptops. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans say that the software giant recently started testing this new Teams client, with plans to launch it as early as March.

While Microsoft has funneled some of this early work into the built-in Teams experience for Windows 11 clients, companies running Teams have been using the older client due to the amount of work involved for Microsoft to rebuild it.

This new application moves Teams away from Electron to Microsoft Edge Webview2 technology.  The company has also moved to React.js, a JavaScript library, which will offer even more User interface improvements in the coming months.

Improvements should mean that Teams opens faster or feels more responsive when introducing yourself to a meeting or responding to messages.  The new app has to address many of the criticisms and complaints about its performance, particularly on older laptops.
Microsoft is currently planning to send users a "beta" version of its new app at the end of March, which includes the option to go back to the existing app if you prefer.
