More Vaccines and Insect Repellents: Urussanga Alert Against Yellow Fever | Denis Luciano

A 29-year-old man living in Imbitoba was admitted to Nereo Ramos Hospital in Florianópolis, with yellow fever. This is the seventh case of the disease recorded in Santa Catarina in 2021, and it affects a city of 21,000 people, 20 kilometers from Crecioma.

It’s just that this guy has been here, at work, for about three weeks. And that was recently – says Urusanga Municipal Health Minister Ingrid Zanilato. He lives in Imbituba, but there is a suspicion that he might have been injured here – he admits.

Four dead monkeys

Fears that the disease could spread in the city have increased in recent days due to the appearance of dead monkeys. This is a sign, according to health authorities, of possible yellow fever contamination. – It is important to remember that the monkey is not a transmitter, but a host – notes Ingrid.

Primates deaths (in forest areas, one in Brasilia last week, and three in De Vila, last weekend) were not yet conclusive, although the yellow fever warning was strengthened. – He is a suspect. Following the protocols, we took samples and sent them to the laboratory in Florianópolis. – The secretary repeats.

Immediately, the required sanitary measures were taken. We examined the areas where monkeys were found dead, visited the nearest homes and reinforced the guidelines on the need for vaccination – and he confirms.

More doses and vaccination chambers

With these suspicions (the case of Imbituba and the death of monkeys) urusanga strengthened vaccination. We do not have a specific number for the number of citizens we have already vaccinated, but we have expanded the offer of the vaccine, which was previously only offered in the center’s vaccination room, and now we are taking it to all neighborhoods – says Ingrid. – But since we have a population with a travel habit, yellow fever vaccination is very common here – he wonders.

The vaccination is done for residents between the ages of 9 months and 59 years. – In addition to looking for a vaccine, we recommend that residents use repellents, because mosquitoes are the vector – it strengthens.

Reconciliation of vaccines

Another challenge is to reconcile the necessary yellow fever vaccination booster with other campaigns for Covid-19 and influenza. Our team works hard, the demand has increased a lot, but we are coping – confirms Ingrid.
