Several explosions occurred on Monday morning in the Ukrainian capital.
According to the Ukrainian presidential office, there is talk of an attack by the so-called kamikaze drones.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitaly Klitschko, reported that one of the explosions occurred in the central Shevchenkivsky district.
Fire crews are working. Many apartment buildings were destroyed. Medical staff on site. We clarify information about the victims, the mayor writes on Telegram before 6.30.
An hour later, witnesses, journalists and government officials reported on social media that there had been several new explosions in the city.
– Two more explosions in the Shevchenkivsky district. Klitschko writes in an update: Stay in shelters.
A week has passed since Russia launched several airstrikes on Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities, in the largest wave of such attacks in months.
The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has He referred to the bombing as a response to “Ukrainian terrorist attacks” – including the attack that destroyed parts of the bridge stretching from mainland Russia to Russia-annexed Crimea.
– If the attacks on Russia continue, we will respond forcefully. The president said the response would be the same as threats against Russia.
It is said that Russian forces have repeatedly used kamikaze drones in recent times to attack cities and infrastructure, including power plants.
More severe problems
Parallel to the explosions in Kyiv, the British Ministry of Defense reported that the logistical problems of Russian forces in southern Ukraine may have become more acute after the destruction of the Crimean Bridge.
It has partially reopened to traffic and repair work is underway, but it is not planned to be completed until 2023.
British intelligence believes that it is likely that the Russians are increasing the flow of supplies through the port of Mariupol, to compensate for the reduced capacity on the Crimean Bridge.
– With the strained Russian presence in Kherson, and the deterioration of the supply route through Crimea, the land line through the Zaporizhzhya province has become more important for the sustainability of the Russian occupation, according to the Defense Ministry.
They particularly highlight the city of Melitopol as an important center of supply lines for the Russians.
