News Alert, Tromsø | A woman from Tromso died of malaria in Gambia

(Northern lights) – We learned of the death of a Norwegian citizen in Gambia. Local authorities in Gambia have confirmed this information and next of kin have been notified, says Anni Håvardsdatter Lund, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nordles.

Popular destinations

Gambia, located on the west coast of Africa, is part of the region with the highest concentration of malaria in the world. The World Health Organization estimated that in 2017 there were approximately 219 million new cases of malaria. Of these, about 435,000 people died. 93% of deaths were in Africa.

The country is also a popular destination.

anopheles

It infects Anopheles mosquitoes, which are the main source of infection. After you are bitten, there is an incubation period of one to two weeks.

The FHI website says this about the malaria mosquito: “The parasite enters the bloodstream where it goes through parts of its life cycle. By sucking blood from infected people, mosquitoes pick up the parasites, which continue their sexual reproduction in the mosquito. It is not directly contagious from person to person.”

According to FHI, “The usual symptoms are fluctuating fever with chills, sweating, anemia, splenomegaly, jaundice, and varying degrees of general symptoms. Depending on the affected organ, the patient may develop nausea, diarrhea, renal failure, jaundice, delirium, convulsions, coma, or focal neurological symptoms.»
