Norway has the safest roads in Europe

Sweden is the second best

In the period 2012-2022, Norway reduced the number of fatal accidents by 20 percent. It is the European Traffic Safety Council (ETSC) that in its annual report refers to Norway as the best in Europe.

Sweden follows Norway with 22 deaths per million inhabitants. Also in Great Britain, Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, Germany and Finland, road traffic deaths were low, at less than 35 deaths per million inhabitants.

With an average of 46 deaths per million inhabitants, European roads are still safer than roads in other parts of the world.

20,678 people lost their lives on European roads in 2022, which equates to nearly 400 per week, an increase since last year. In large parts of Europe, there is an increase in road deaths after 2020 and 2021. The ETSC points to the pandemic and transport restrictions as the answer to this. If the numbers are compared to the year before the pandemic in 2019, there is a decrease in the number of deaths by 9 percent.

From the perspective of ten years, the development is also moving in the right direction. Compared to 2012, the number of deaths in the countries of Europe decreased by 5,868 people on the roads in 2022. 140,000 were seriously injured in Europe last year.
