PlayStation Portal is Sony’s new “portable console”.

Last May, Sony announced a new product called Project Q, which is seen as the Japanese company’s new portable console. Now, we have the official trailer for this product that will hit the market later this year as PlayStation Portal.

This will be a device that aims to give all gamers a freedom that didn’t exist until now. The concept is that they can play their games anywhere, taking their PlayStation 5 experience to the palm of their hands.

PlayStation Portal is a portable device designed for PS5 owners

We can’t look at PlayStation Portal as a portable console in the full sense of the word. Although it allows you to play games anywhere, you will not be able to play any games on this console.

PlayStation Portal will only play games that you have already installed on your PlayStation 5. This means that the cloud service included with PlayStation Plus Premium will not be supported by this product, nor will PS VR2 games.

In short, PlayStation Portal will act as an extension of the PS5. It will move your games to any room in the house, thus stopping you from being constantly attached to where your console is installed.

PlayStation Portal will work in locations where Wi-Fi speeds over 5 Mbps are available. However, Sony recommends connection speeds of at least 15 Mbps for a smooth and complete gaming experience.

This portable device does not have a Bluetooth connection, only Wi-Fi and PlayStation Link. The latter is Sony’s proprietary wireless technology that provides low latency for lossless sound quality and switching between compatible devices.

PlayStation Portal offers an 8-inch LCD screen

Looking at its specifications, some details are still unclear. However, Sony confirmed the presence of an 8-inch LCD screen with Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

For a product designed for the gaming sector, this refresh rate is slightly lower than expected. On the PlayStation Portal side of the screen, we have controllers with the same design and features as the DualSense controller for PS5.

Also note the presence of a USB-C input, 3.5mm jack, and speakers at the top. Other technical details of this product should be clarified in the future.

It remains only to inform you that PlayStation Portal will hit stores for €219.99. It will be available at the end of this year, without specifying a specific date.
