Veteran Actor James Handy Dies After Stabbing at Los Angeles Home

Los Angeles police have arrested the son of actor James Handy’s girlfriend following the veteran performer’s fatal stabbing at a residence in the city, authorities said Thursday.

Handy, an 81-year-old actor known for appearances in major Hollywood films including “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” was found with a stab wound to the chest outside a Los Angeles home on Wednesday morning, according to law enforcement officials.

The incident has shocked many in the entertainment community, where Handy had built a decades-long career as a respected character actor in film and television.

LAPD Responded After Disturbing 911 Call

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were dispatched to the property after a 911 caller reportedly stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When officers arrived, they discovered Handy unconscious in the front yard of the home. Police said he had suffered at least one stab wound to the chest.

Emergency responders transported the actor to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Suspect Identified as Girlfriend’s Son

Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend. Authorities said Gledhill lived at the residence with his mother.

Investigators said Gledhill told responding officers that he was the person they were searching for.

He was later booked on suspicion of murder.

According to jail records, Gledhill’s bail was set at $2 million.

Authorities have not released additional details about what may have led to the stabbing, and investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Attorney Information Not Immediately Available

As of Thursday, it was not immediately clear whether Gledhill had retained legal representation.

Jail records did not list an attorney for him, and messages left with the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office were not immediately returned.

The case remains under investigation.

James Handy Remembered for Long Hollywood Career

Handy spent decades working steadily in Hollywood, building a reputation as a reliable character actor with credits spanning both television and film.

Many moviegoers recognized him for his role as an exterminator in the 1995 family adventure film “Jumanji.” More recently, he appeared as bartender Jimmy in the 2022 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick,” starring Tom Cruise.

Throughout his career, Handy appeared in numerous television dramas, crime series, and major studio productions, becoming a familiar face to audiences across generations.

Hollywood Community Reacts

While formal tributes were still emerging Thursday, Handy’s death added to a growing list of high-profile incidents involving violence in Los Angeles, a city that remains at the center of the U.S. entertainment industry.

Friends, colleagues, and longtime viewers have begun reflecting on Handy’s extensive body of work and his decades of contributions to American film and television.

Investigation Continues

Police have not announced a possible motive, and investigators have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed.

Authorities said the investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses connected to the case.

Handy’s death marks the tragic end of a long acting career that spanned generations of Hollywood productions, from classic family films to modern box-office hits.
