During the holidays, science takes to the streets across the country with hundreds of free participation activities, organized by Ciência Viva centers, scientific institutions, independent foundations, companies and scientific societies.

Watching Alvilla’s most active night-dwellers, taking a mini microbial safari with a geothermal snack in the Azores, listening to the roar of deer in Braganca or prospecting for gold in Portas de Murao, in Proenca Nova, are some of the unmissable acts.

Activities with a lot of science: from Guimarães to the Azores

Enjoy Science – Centro Ciência Viva de Guimarães | July 17 and 24 | August 7, 14, 21 and 28 | September 4 & 11 10 a.m.

Participants will embark on the discovery of science in Guimarães. At the meeting point, they will be provided with a small map with the route to follow, as well as a list of places where they will go to discover science on their own.

Centro Ciência Viva do Alviela – Car Endoscope | 16, 17 and 30 July | August 7, 13, 20 and 28 Always at 7:30 pm

Observe the life of cave bats through infrared cameras and follow the departure of these species for hunting. The activity includes visiting the QUIROPTÁRIO exhibition at Centro Ciência Viva do Alviela – Carsoscope, observing and interpreting the different species of bats in Lapa da Canada, observing and interpreting the exit of different species of bats outside the hunting cave, and identification of species using ultrasonic detectors.

The International Space Station (ISS) meets the ‘Summer Triangle’

The idea of ​​the activity is to observe the sunset, follow the path of the International Space Station to the “Summer Triangle”, and view images (taken by telescopes) of celestial bodies – nebulae and star clusters – in that region.

In this procedure, participants will visit Arraial dos 3 Irmãos. The goal will be to explore how the history and exploration of this resource has contributed to the development of the population that depends on it.

Microbian Mini Safari

Azores Microbial Observatory Science Center | July 27 11:00 am | July 29 – 12:00

Guided tour of the thermal springs of Furnas – a smoked field at Chã das Caldeiras. The goal is to identify in-field markers associated with thermophilic microbial communities, as well as to assess their ecological diversity and abiotic factors such as temperature and pH of different springs.

During this activity, participants will have the opportunity to prepare and enjoy a geothermal snack.
