Stonehenge, Scotland | New research shows that the famous Stonehenge stone came from Scotland, not Wales

In a report published in the journal Nature, the researchers concluded that the six-ton rock came from the northern part of Scotland.

Therefore, researchers believe that the stone may have been transported more than 700 kilometers to the current location of Stonehenge.

“It blew our socks off when we discovered it came from north-east Scotland,” says Professor Nick Pearce of Aberystwyth University in Wales, who was one of the researchers involved in the report. BBC.

“It was a shock to say the least,” he adds. “For the stone to have come from over 700 kilometres away is unbelievable.”

Researchers believe the latest discovery suggests that the construction of Stonehenge required more collaboration and planning and was more extensive than previously thought.

Researchers analyzed fragments of the so-called “altar stone” and found similar characteristics in stones from north-east Scotland.

“The geological footprint has not been found in any other area of the whole of Great Britain,” says Pearce.

Stonehenge was probably built somewhere between 2500 BC and 2000 BC. However, the wall and tomb surrounding the monument are older than that. Stonehenge is one of the most famous buildings in the world.
