On the eve of the ninth session of the COP and while the discussion on the future of electronic smoking devices continues in Brazil with the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), a bill authorizing the sale, use and import of these products has been submitted to the Federal Chamber.

Authored by Congressman Kim Katagoire (DEM-SP), the bill states that e-cigarettes and hot tobacco products, which are produced by major companies in the sector and introduced in dozens of countries, “would be considered all-purpose cigarettes.” In justification, the congressman claims that many smokers have joined in with electronic devices in search of an alternative that is less harmful to health. “If the law allows the use of cigarettes in a certain place, then electronic equipment can also be used. It makes no sense to allow conventional cigarettes and ban their electronic version, which is less harmful to health, says the text.

The MP also claims that local legislation will regulate the areas in which the products can be consumed, as with conventional cigarettes. Of course, we don’t intend to make an apology for smoking. The goal is to allow more people to stop smoking the traditional cigarette — more harmful to health than the online version,” he says.
