“This opens the door to a completely different world of therapeutic opportunities, or as we say, a potential new substrate for cancer treatment,” explains Frank Winkler, winner of the 2023 Biel Prize in Biomedicine.

“I think the treatments that can come from here will really make a difference, in the sense that this is a new way of looking at these tumors,” believes Thomas Connor, winner of the 2023 Biel Prize in Biomedicine.

“For us, it is an incredible honor to see our work recognized as co-authors,” says Varun Venkataramani, winner of the 2023 Biel Prize in Biomedicine.

“Portugal is one of the leading countries in the field of biomedicine,” says Ralf Adolphs, Chairman of the Jury for the BIAL Prize in Biomedicine 2023.

“It is a high-quality work that would not have been possible without bringing together a very diverse and integrated team,” highlights Pedro Nuno Teixeira, Secretary of State for Higher Education.

“R&D and science are essential for the well-being of human beings today and in the future,” says Manuel Pizarro, Minister of Health.

“The last winners of the Bial Prize in Biomedicine were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine months later,” recalls Luis Portela, president of Bial.

“What we need to do is scale up, collaborate more and internationalize more, but we have talent, youth and the interest of the scientific community,” says João Sagua, dean of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
