Mercadona opened its first supermarket in Portugal on July 2, 2019, in Vila Nova de Gaia, having opened the brand’s first store in Gondomar, in the parish of Vanzeres, 20 days later.

Four years later, the Spanish retailer, which already has 42 units in our country, strengthened its network in Gondomar, opening a supermarket in Es Cosme, next to the Fernando Pessoa University Teaching Hospital.

An official source in the company revealed to Negócios that “the new Mercadona supermarket, the second in the municipality of Gondomar, will open on the 4th of October”.

With a sales area of ​​about 1,900 square metres, Mercadona de S. Cosme “will provide about 75 new, stable and high-quality jobs, with contracts open from day one, thus contributing to job creation,” the office said. The same person in charge of the Spanish retail stores.

In addition to supermarkets, the company has three innovation centers in our country (in Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Lisbon) and a logistics park in Povoa de Varzim, and is building a new building in Almerim, in the Santarem district.

In an investment of €225 million that will create 500 new jobs, it is scheduled to open in 2024 and will be Mercadona’s largest logistics cluster in the entire Iberian Peninsula.

Since its arrival in Portugal, Mercadona has directly contributed €1,297 million to GDP, generated €4,422 million in sales in the entire production chain and created 55,655 direct, indirect and induced jobs.

These are the three main conclusions of a study on the economic impact of the Spanish supermarket chain in Portugal, prepared by the University of Minho’s Economic and Trade Policy Research Center and Ivy (Valencia Institute of Economic Research).

According to the same study, for every euro of revenue generated in Mercadona supermarkets, nine are generated in the economy, and for each job, more than five new jobs are created in the country.

In terms of taxes, the Spanish retailer delivered more than 726.5 million euros between 2019 and 2022.
