The Queen’s death may be in the interest of Harry and Meghan’s reconciliation with the family

The couple, who were in the UK when the Queen died on Thursday, joined Harry’s brother William and his wife Catherine at Windsor Castle on Saturday. This was the four’s first public appearance together since 2020.

The four, dressed in black, watched the flowers people left on the occasion of the Queen’s death, and greeted the audience, without revealing the state of the couple’s relationship. But the decision to appear together on camera indicates a breakthrough in reconciliation.

According to the press specializing in the British monarchy, William, heir to the throne, has reconnected with his brother, who has criticized the family since renouncing his royal duties. Two days earlier, the situation was quite different: Harry, 37, had arrived alone in a car in Balmoral, Scotland, shortly after the Queen’s death. William and the other family members, with the exception of Kate, had arrived earlier in one car.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said Thursday that the fact that the two brothers arrived separately shows they are “far from each other”. He added that Harry and Meghan are seen as causing “a lot of damage to the royal family in recent months” with their comments.

After Princes’ mother Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, the brothers moved the world by walking behind her coffin in a funeral procession. William was 15 years old and Harry was only 12 years old.

As adults, they looked very close and that photo remained after William married longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton in 2011. But after Harry’s 2018 marriage to American actress Meghan Markle, the relationship started to tremble.

Harry said in a 2019 interview that he and his brother were going “two different paths”. A year later, he and Megan announced their move to the United States.

In an explosive interview between the couple and Oprah Winfrey in March of 2021, Meghan confirmed that Catherine made her cry. They also claimed that a member of the royal family, whom they did not identify, speculated on the skin color of the couple’s future baby, as Meghan is of African descent.

William responded by saying the royal family was “not racist at all”. The two brothers apparently had a distant relationship when they met again last year to unveil a statue of their mother. Nor did they meet for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June.

Meghan recently told The Cut that she now feels “free” to tell her own story, which some saw as a disguised threat to the monarchy.
