The restoration of Rembrandt’s “Night Tour” yields the largest and most accurate artistic portrait – life

The information was published today by the museum, on its website, announcing that this image, the largest work of art ever, is four times the resolution of the previous image, which was published by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam about 18 months earlier.

This image, available for viewing on the website rijksmuseum.nl/Nightwatch, was taken as part of the research and restoration work for “A Ronda da Noite”, which began in 2019.

With a resolution of 717 giga pixels – each pixel represents an area of 5 micrometers (0.005 mm²) and the complete composite image contains 8,439 individual images measuring 5.5 cm by 4.1 cm each – this image allows you to magnify small dye particles in a “Ronda da Noite” frame and will make the job Much easier.

“January 2022 will mark the beginning of the conservation phase of ‘A Ronda da Noite’. The foreground of the painting will not be visible for a short period of time, but thanks to this image, the public will still be able to enjoy Rembrandt’s masterpiece down to the smallest detail,” Rijksmuseum director Taco Debets wrote in Text published on the website.

To achieve this image, the team used a special camera, using artificial intelligence to fuse these small images together to form the final big image.

Scientist Robert Erdmann, who leads the team, said that “making this image was quite a challenge” “a lot of people thought it was impossible, they even considered it crazy to try.”

“We have gone above and beyond what can justifiably be described as a world-class achievement,” he said.

This new image will allow scientists involved in the research and restoration process to study the painting from a distance in more detail, and will make it possible to follow future aging processes with greater accuracy.

The image is so sharp that neural networks can now be used to quickly detect particles that were not detected in the previous image.

The second phase of the restoration of “A Ronda da Noite” will begin on January 19 this year, with the first actions in the same framework.

The first task will consist of assembling “A Ronda da Noite” on a new stretcher, an action necessary due to “distortions” in the canvas, in particular the ripples clearly visible in the upper left corner.

Although this is an aspect that needs immediate attention, it is easy to address and will not have any impact on the future of the board, the team explains.

After that, the actions to be carried out will be evaluated step by step.

Launched in July 2019, the painting’s restoration and investigation project is the largest and most ambitious ever at the Rijksmuseum.

“The Night Round” is an oil painting on canvas, one of the most famous paintings by Rembrandt, executed in 1642, which usually occupies the honorary gallery of the Rijksmuseum, showing the guard of Amsterdam under the command of Captain Frans Banning Koc.

It is a work that fits in with the Dutch tradition of group portraits, which emerged in the so-called golden age of Dutch art.

As part of the project, the Rijksmuseum has created a large glass box around the painting to be restored to the public.
