What is the beauty of flowers? This is the question that the next scientific session at the Arquitecto Cosmelli Sant’Anna Library, in Lisbon, wants to answer. The knowledge-packed event takes place on June 15th and begins with a book reading. But the fun doesn’t stop there, as the little ones will be able to ‘tinker with science’, doing experiments on flowers or on flowers, in order to discover more ‘about these different structures of plants’.
This is the next (and final this season) session of the “Science at BACS Junior” initiative. Aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 12, explains Raquel Bastardo, a library assistant located in the Archdiocese of Santo Antonio, the activity begins with a children’s story reading or exploration of images from technical books on the subject in question. This is followed by “hands-on experimental activities using daily and laboratory materials”.
Raquel Bastardo says the adhesion, enthusiasm and reaction of the younger audience has been positive. “Especially after the pandemic was besieged, as it was necessary to re-create the habits of coming to the library to participate in activities.”
Each “Science at BACS Junior” session has a different theme. On a monthly basis, throughout the 2021/2022 school year, topics such as the senses, space, Earth or volcanoes were addressed.
The activity is free and inscriptions must be made to the library’s email address ([email protected]). The last session will take place on June 15th. After that, “Science at BACS Junior” goes on vacation, back for more experiences in October.
This initiative is being promoted by the Monitors Calling for Science, from the Pinto da Rocha Cabral Research Institute, in partnership with the Library. The project started in 2018 and aims to spread science among the library audience, and there are also activities for seniors.
