Foot-and-mouth disease vaccination is no longer mandatory in Minas Gerais, but the state is still not internationally recognized as foot-and-mouth disease-free without vaccination granted by the World Organization for Animal Health. To achieve this title, a series of steps must be completed by the official veterinary service, the private sector and rural producers in order for the state of Minas Gerais to finally obtain this recognition after international audits. One of these steps is to update data on the Minas Gerais herd, an essential measure for effective health surveillance in the state.

In March this year, the state of Minas Gerais received permission from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) to suspend mandatory vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, which until last year was required in two stages, in May and November. . The requirement now is for rural producers to update their herd data at the Minas Gerais Agricultural Institute (IMA). In addition to cows and buffaloes, producers of other species such as chicken, fish, bees, sheep and goats should also contact the IMA to update their information. This measure is necessary so that the agency knows where these production animals are located, and thus act quickly and efficiently in the event of an outbreak.

Since the beginning of the year, the institute has been calling on producers to update the data. To verify FMD-free status without vaccination, OMSA requires information on the last 24 months for animals exposed to the disease, with data by species. “Producers are accustomed to vaccinating their animals against foot-and-mouth disease in the months of May and November. Now, we have the task of making them aware of the need to update the registration of their herds for effective health surveillance in the state of Minas and the consequent achievement of international recognition as being free of the disease without the need for vaccination.” “, explains the General Manager from the state of Minas. Emma, Antonio Carlos de Murray.

How to make

The update can be done through the Rural Producer Portal, which can be accessed Via the IMA website. If the product has not yet been able to access the portal, it is necessary to register. The procedure can also be carried out via email or in person at one of the units in the state. When adhering to herd modernization procedures, the producer must also declare rabies vaccination for cattle, buffaloes, donkeys, horses, mules, goats and sheep.

Producers who do not update their data may be prevented from issuing the Animal Crossing Guide (GTA), which is the official document for the crossing of animals and contains basic information about traceability (origin, destination, purpose, species, vaccinations, among others) and they will also be banned. From accessing the animal health register to updating the livestock farm registration.

The withdrawal of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease represents a gain for agriculture in the state of Minas Gerais, as it opens more doors for the export of meat produced in the state, as many countries require health certificates of the absence of the disease. The director of the institute adds, “The producer saves money by not vaccinating his herd, as he no longer has to spend on purchasing vaccines and hiring specialists to administer the vaccines.”

There are no cases

Minas Gerais has not seen cases of foot-and-mouth disease since 1996, and vaccination has been required in the state for more than 70 years. In 2001, the state of Minas was classified as free of foot-and-mouth disease through vaccination. In Brazil, Santa Catarina, Acre, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondonia and the regions of Amazonas and Mato Grosso states already have disease-free status without vaccination.
