The world’s largest bank was hit by a ransomware attack and was saved thanks to a USB stick

It is clear that there are devices in the technology market that are superior to others, although they still exist. But this does not mean that it is no longer important. According to recent information, the largest bank in the world, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), was subjected to a ransomware attack and was rescued thanks to…. To a USB stick.

USB pen saves the world's largest bank from hackers

according to Recent newsThe largest bank in the world, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) in the USA, was hit by a ransomware attack last Thursday (9) and was saved thanks to, imagine, a USB stick. The hacker attack prevented the financial institution from liquidating the operations of the US Treasury and the bank successfully decided to use a flash drive to quickly resolve the situation.

After the invasion, it was confirmed that it was a ransomware attack that impacted and interrupted ICBC's financial services systems. Once the attack occurred, the bank was forced to turn off all affected equipment and decided to send launch data via a messaging system inserted into a USB memory across Manhattan.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday (10) that the bank is joining efforts to reduce the impact of risks and losses following the attack. Wang Wenbin, ministry spokesman, said:The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) is closely monitoring the matter and making every effort in emergency response and supervisory communications".

As for the attack, many ransomware experts point the finger at the Lockbit hacker group, although the criminals did not mention the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) on their dark web page, as is usual after the attack.

Even as the years go by, it is always important to emphasize that computer security is one of the fundamental points of any device, especially if we are talking about technologies that support large companies, and even more so when it comes to powerful entities with great responsibility, as is the case for banks. But even when it doesn't go your way... there should always be a backup plan, and it doesn't always come from where you expect.
