Tourism and weather | Many tourists have disappeared and died: Norwegians warn against traveling to holiday paradise

(The newspaper online): Several tourists have died and been reported missing after walking on the Greek islands in recent weeks. One of the deceased is British TV presenter Michael Mosley.

CNN He also writes that Greek police are still conducting a search to find at least three more tourists on the Greek islands. The three are said to have disappeared while walking in extreme temperatures.

In fact, the scale indicated the 40s. The heat doesn't look like it's going away anytime soon either.

A hot wave

– It's very hot there, and we northerners, including the British, are not used to this kind of temperature, says Annette Helen Ranhoff to Nettavisen, referring to Greece and the affected tourists there.

Helen Ranhoff is a senior researcher at FHI and specializes in internal medicine and geriatrics. It has a clarion call for the Norwegians in the Southern Tour to get enough water.

-It's very important when it's hot. We have also seen that younger people can suffer heatstroke and die at this temperature.

She differentiates between heatstroke and dehydration, but emphasizes that dehydration can also be serious.

– People sweat as hard as they can and can't fill enough bags. They then become limp, which may cause them to fall, and become disoriented and unable to care for themselves.

– This is something completely different

In addition to drinking plenty of water, she also recommends eating plenty of salt.

-Otherwise you can get too low In the blood, this makes you sick too. You can't drink five liters of water and not get any salt. Then you can enjoy it with some potato chips or cured sausage.

-So you should really eat potato chips to take care of yourself?

– Yes, in such a case you really should. This is not an everyday situation, this is something completely different.

Here's what you can do to avoid heatstroke:

  • Drink a lot
  • Wear light, airy and bright clothes
  • Bath or shower with cold water, perhaps placing wet towels on the skin
  • Stay in cool rooms
  • Reduce physical activity

The Associated Press news agency wrote on Monday that another tourist was found dead on one of the Greek islands. The man, an American tourist, was reported missing after he went for a walk in the extreme temperatures.

We must think more carefully

In this heat now, Ranhoff says, people should do an extra round with themselves before going on vacation.

– Since heat waves are hitting southern Europe now, I would probably advise people of advanced age or who suffer from chronic heart or lung diseases to go. At least they should think about it.

She is particularly concerned that people should take care of each other.

– I am very concerned that you take care of those around you who are most at risk, namely the frail elderly, people with chronic diseases, and children. Children rise in temperature more quickly than adults.
