Two years later, the Putantan Science Park reopened to the public

After two years of being closed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Science Park of the Butantan Institute has reopened to the public. Those who visit the park will henceforth be able to see a new, refurbished space, which includes 22 environmental, educational, and recreational attractions. One of the goals of the place is to develop social interest in science and research.

At this time, the public will have access to the Biological and Microbiology Museums, Espaço Terra Firme, Macacário and Serpentário, as well as Horto Oswaldo Cruz and Praça Vital Brazil. Starting next Tuesday (5), the entire structure will be completed and ready for a visit.

“We have used the moment of the pandemic to reconfigure the park, restore historic buildings and create a public visiting space linked to science education. It is a great joy for all of us in Bhutantan, and now we hope to have a presence for the residents of Sao Paulo state, Brazil and the world,” said Dimas Covas, President of Bhutantan.

The Green Science Park covers an area of 725,000 square meters and is located in Butantan, west of São Paulo. The science park is expected to attract one million visitors each year.

Among the main attractions is the Serpentarium, which allows the observation of Brazilian animal species, including those used for the production of poisons. There is also a modern street with gardens, a water mirror, picnic space, and the Macacário which is home to a group of Macaca Mullata monkeys.

This month of July, the space will present a special holiday program, to promote scientific activities, a display of snake venom extraction, stories about the Jaracas and their colours, trails along the Butantan Forest trails and other attractions.
