The State University of Maranhão (Uema) participated in the opening ceremony of the State Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation, which took place on Thursday night (21), at the Uema Architecture and Iopian Building, in the historic center of São Paulo. Louis. The conference, organized by the State Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (Secti), with the support of the Maranhão Foundation for the Support of Scientific and Technological Research and Development (Fapema), aims to collect proposals for the preparation of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for the next ten years.

The event was opened by the President of Secti, Natassia Weba and the President of Fapema, Nordman Wall, in the presence of authorities such as the Vice-Rector of the State University of Maranhão (Uema), Prof. Dr. Paulo Catunda, Minister of Science and Technology for Social Development (Sedes), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Inácio Arruda, in charge of the keynote lecture of the evening.

The event focuses on developing the National Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (2025-2035) and formulating a new state policy. Topics covered include national system recovery, business innovation in remanufacturing, and the strategic role of CT&I in national programmes.

“Without research, there is no just, sustainable and developed world, which is the theme of the conference. Therefore, there is no way to have a just, sustainable and developed Maranhão if research continues to be treated the way it continues to be treated, without the importance it carries. In my speeches I always make a point of emphasizing However, Oema is working to reduce inequality in Maranhão. We have about 80% of our students from general education, and this percentage has remained the same for a few years. What should we as an institution do to maintain it? Create more university courses, create more Master's and doctoral courses so that we can reap the benefits not only in just four years, which is the normal course duration, but instead, thinking about a long-term project, of having a doctoral student in a specific field of activity who in her family was the first to enter the university. In other words, we not only want to graduate people from Maranhão, but we also want to provide conditions for them to remain active in the field of research,” emphasizes the Vice-Rector of the University of Uema, Prof. Dr. Paolo Catonda.

Maranhão's contributions, presented at the state conference, will be sent to form part of the national discussions. These proposals will be integrated into the “National Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy – ENCTI 2025-2035” plan, targeting this sector. The regional conference will be held in Recife from April 24 to 25, and the national conference from June 4 to 6 in Brasilia.
