Meta is preparing great news for WhatsApp, and the latest update available today comes with one of the ideas for that.
According to the portal WABetaInfoThe latest version of WhatsApp Beta for Android now has a new section, focusing on what is described as “third-party chats”, indicating the possibility of the platform supporting other chat platforms.
At the moment, the function does not appear to be working or is inactive for users, but the title hints at the company’s possible plans for the future. Ultimately, Meta’s idea is to open up its encrypted chat platform to third parties, allowing them to use the platform to communicate between users.
This news also comes almost two days after the European Commission ruled that WhatsApp was a “gatekeeper” and that, as such, it would have to open its platform to interested competitors, within the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
With these new laws, WhatsApp needs to provide capabilities so that third-party applications can work within it, which may allow competing applications to have the ability to send messages to WhatsApp users, and vice versa.
The idea of the DMA would be to impose rules to prevent large companies and internet platforms from controlling the internet, providing an unfair market for smaller competitors.
