Actor Matthew Perry died on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, due to the acute effects of using ketamine as a painkiller, according to autopsy results released in December of last year.
Speaking to People magazine, a police source confirmed that the investigation into Matthew Perry's death is “nearing its end” and that authorities believe “several people” will be charged.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office stated in an autopsy report that Perry drowned “in the hot part of the pool” but that this was a minor factor in his death.
The report also notes that coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine, a medication used to treat substance abuse, also contributed to the actor's premature death.
Perry's death was announced after he was found unconscious at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. An autopsy was performed the next day.
The actor was using ketamine at the time of his death to help him battle his drug addiction. In his memoir Friends, Lovers, and That Terrible Thing, the star of Friends, one of the most successful series in television history, takes us behind the scenes of the sitcom, but also into his struggle against addiction.
