Peru secured their place in the 2022 World Cup South American region play-off, by defeating Paraguay 2-0 tonight (Wednesday morning in Portugal).

That was what was decided in this latest round of South American qualifiers, with Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador and Uruguay already securing the four spots for direct qualification. Peru has already entered fifth place, one point ahead of Colombia and two points on Chile, the remaining candidates take a place in the play-off, which will be played with an Asian team (Australia or the United Arab Emirates).

But at the National Stadium in Lima, the victory of the Peruvian team began to take shape. Just five minutes later, she found a long pass from midfield to striker Gianluca Lapadula, who had the knack to open the scoring. Sebastian Coates started and Manuel Ugarte entered in the 74th minute – Darwin Nunez did not leave the bench.

To achieve the calendar, Brazil beat Bolivia 4-0, with goals by Lucas Paqueta (24), Richarlison (45 and 90 + 1) and Bruno Guimarães (66), while Argentina (with Nicolas Otamendi (Benfica) to complete 90 minutes) tied 1-1 in Ecuador. Young striker Julian Alvarez (24) led Argentina, while Ener Valencia equalized in extra time, after a penalty kick awarded to defender Nicolas Tagliafico to hit the ball.
