His grandfather founded a textile factory in Biella in 1881, the Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti. Building on his family’s expertise in producing luxury fabrics, Cerruti ventured into apparel production in the late 1950s.

His first men’s collection, “Hitman”, was introduced in 1957 and considered revolutionary in menswear at the time, with a style that was both elegant and comfortable. He was also the creator of the men’s “disassembled jacket”, in the 1960s. The first Cerruti store opened in 1967 on the Place de la Madeleine, in Paris, where Cerruti relocated the company’s headquarters.

He was also associated with launching another great name in Italian and international fashion when, in the mid-1960s, he hired a young Giorgio Armani to collaborate on his Fratelli Cerruti Workshop.
