It is a small sample of the failures that brought the names of the characters to the title: films that wanted to formalize the ascent to another level. – Now in quotes – in “seriousness” and “recognition” (needs Spielberg may never have gotten rid of) or they were looking to demarcate the territory as their territory, which was theirs alone (infamous in Spike Lee’s identity politics). But there was another, unprogrammed, reality in it that broke: moments of earnestness, academicism, perhaps narcissism, letting the best filmmakers escape—Danny DeVito’s film is all the more interesting because it applied doses of violence and pathos to a well-acted generic genre, but finished halfway, short of completely destroying it.
