Science for the Future – UFJF News

Think about new technologies and their impact on the future. This was the premise of the meeting promoted by the UFJF Extension Project science that we dowho took Zélia Ludwig, a professor from the Department of Physics at the Institute of Exact Sciences (ICE) at the UFJF, to speak to students at the Duque de Caxias State School on the third.

Starting with the theme “Search for New Sustainable and Renewable Technologies,” the teacher led the conversation that introduced UFJF products to the students. One example was a crystal produced in one of the Foundation’s laboratories. “I thought Zelia’s visit here was very important because it showed me things I didn’t know. I was very interested in crystal, I had no idea that it could have been made by researchers, and to me it had been mined from somewhere,” noted student Tasian Carolina Oliveira, in her second year of high school.

Zelia also highlighted her path as a scientist, speaking about the beginning of her career and her experience at the Materials Research Center in Missouri, US, when she worked with NASA researchers. For her, it is important for students to realize that university and science are paths that are possible for everyone.

“This project is very important because we need to transfer this knowledge to children and schools, because we want to see them there at the university and the science we do is a science that must respond to the problems of society,” the teacher’s output of the importance of the visits promoted by the extension work for primary and secondary school students indicated.

Brenda Victoria Souza, a high school sophomore, mentioned that she felt more excited after the visit: “I find it very interesting, because that way it becomes something more practical, that gets talked about more. Schools don’t just focus on books, they open the minds of students who are concerned Doubting about what to pursue in a professional career or just as a hobby. It opened my mind more to this area that I want to focus on, because having women in science is a very interesting and very representative thing.”

Giselle Lima Reis, Professor at EE Duque de Caxias, has been involved with the project since 2018 and highlighted how it has helped strengthen ties and reduce barriers between basic education and university. “Students really like it, they are always interested and the importance of this project is to show our students that the world is not an elusive person, that any of them can be a scientist, as long as they dedicate themselves and that science does exist for society, science exists only for the benefit of society.”

Learn more about the project

The A Ciência que Fazer expansion project has been developed by the UFJF with the aim of promoting scholarly citizenship through visits by UFJF professors and researchers to primary and secondary schools in Juiz de Fora and the region. Meetings are held throughout the year in registered schools.

Professors and researchers are presented in a conversational format with the central point being sharing and interacting with students. In this way, everyone’s doubts are accepted into a dynamic that differs from a general class, bringing the personality of the scientist closer to the reality of the students.
