A visit to an outdoor exhibition in St Helier, in the Channel Islands, was abruptly cut short and the royal couple were moved to a nearby hotel, The Telegraph reported on Monday.
King Charles III and Camilla began a two-day visit to the Channel Islands on Monday, starting in Jersey. The programme included a special session of the Council of States (the local parliament) in the capital St Helier – and later the monarchs visited an exhibition that brought together the best of Jersey, focusing on key areas of Jersey’s agriculture, fishing and aquaculture industries.
The visit was abruptly stopped and the couple were transferred to the nearby Hotel Pomme d'Or.
The apparent threat was dealt with quietly and the public was not informed of any developments. It is understood that there was a “small matter of concern”, but after investigation it turned out to be a false alarm. According to the authorities, all precautions were taken and the programme resumed shortly after, when the couple met the public and military personnel outside.
The trip will end on Tuesday, a day before the State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday, which coincides with the Queen's 77th birthday.
The royal couple last visited the islands in 2012 for their Diamond Jubilee year.
