What actually works against a hangover? – live healthy

End of the year festivities sometimes lead to excessive alcohol consumption and the result is a hangover. The actions against the effects are numerous, but not all of them are effective.

The first step is not to overdo it. It should be noted that cirrhosis of the liver, some types of cancer, and cardiovascular problems are associated with unlimited alcohol consumption. According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), 3 million deaths a year result from this violation.

“The exaggerated amount is more than 20 grams of alcohol for women and more than 30 grams for men,” notes Mônica Valverde Viana, director of the Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH). In practice, there are two glasses of wine or two cans of beer for a man and a half for a woman per day.

The number of doses depends on the alcohol content of each type of drink – and varies by gender. Men have a greater amount of enzymes that are used to metabolize alcohol, so in women the indicator is lower.

If we exceed this amount, the body will not be able to metabolize everything at once, causing dehydration and hypoglycemia. ‘It will be the main reason behind the hangover.’

Moisturizing between doses is the second step to avoiding symptoms. “For every glass of wine, two glasses of water, to prevent a more detrimental effect on the body,” he advises. Another recommendation is not to drink on an empty stomach. (Einstein Agency)

Is a hangover lighter in young adults?

number! It’s a mistake to think that when you’re young, a hangover is lighter. But age does not play a large role in the effects of overindulgence.

The SBH director explains: “It has to do with the body’s alcohol metabolism system. Digestive enzymes, especially those in the stomach and liver, vary from person to person.”

According to Monica, older adults tend to take more medications, such as for high blood pressure or diabetes. This leads to an increase in the liver, which is responsible for the metabolism of these drugs. “For this reason, we tend to see more of these harmful effects of alcohol in older adults,” he adds.

One pill before, one after?

Experts say that taking liver medication before or after drinking is of no use. “There is nothing proven in scientific studies that is worth doing,” he says. “The ideal is to stick to the amount of alcohol according to what you drink.” If precautions are not taken while taking alcohol, the following day should be followed: hydration with water, sports drinks and fruit juice, snacks and rest.
