The Observador Natal 2023 study, carried out by Cetelem, a brand of the personal finance group BNP Paribas, indicates that only 16% plan to go on holiday at the end of the year, with the intention of going for a walk (8%). or to meet family (8%) – a value similar to previous years, but still below pre-pandemic levels.
The amount participants expect to spend is 289 euros, 10% less than last year.
Regarding the destinations chosen for their holidays, the majority of participants (70%) will choose to reside in the country, which is a higher number than last year (59%). Therefore, fewer people are planning a vacation abroad compared to 2022 (38% compared to 48% in 2022).
For New Year's Eve celebrations, expected spending remains at last year's values (€82). Portuguese respondents plan to celebrate the New Year at home (67%) or in the homes of family and friends (30%).
Only 7% will welcome 2024 with street parties. On the other hand, compared to 2022, the intention to go to restaurants decreases (3% versus 8% in 2022). The number of participants who intend to celebrate this occasion in hotels also decreased compared to last year (8% compared to 5% in 2022).
The same study suggests that six out of 10 people with a credit card will use it on Christmas/New Year's Eve, and expect to spend around €240, €10 less on average than in 2022.
