Mexico: – Missing tourists found dead

Mexican authorities found three dead in the northern Mexican state of Baja, they said in a statement late Friday evening, according to what was reported by Reuters news agency.

The deceased are presumed to be three tourists, who were last seen on April 27, sources close to the investigation told the news agency.

Brothers Callum and Jake Robinson from Australia, as well as American Jack Carter Rudd, were on a surfing holiday in Ensenada – located an hour and a half drive from the US border.

Mexican authorities say the deceased has not been officially identified, and forensic investigations will be conducted.

The prosecutor said on Thursday that three people had been investigated in connection with the case, but it was currently unclear whether the three were involved in the disappearances.

The prosecutor should also have mentioned that tents were found in the area where the missing people were last seen, but they were officially searched several days after they were last seen, Reuters wrote.

Baja California is one of the most violent states in the country, but tourist areas like Ensenada are considered safer.

– We are aware of the reports, and are closely monitoring the situation, the US State Department said in a statement regarding the deaths, to Reuters.

An Australian Foreign Affairs Department spokesman said they were working closely with Mexican authorities and Australian police.

They also have close contact with relatives of the deceased, Reuters wrote.
