Can streaming games replace consoles?

A little over 20 years ago, there was a type of business that was circulating around the world: movie rental stores. Renting DVDs on weekends and returning them only on Mondays used to be a tradition. This ritual was also repeated with games, which for a long time were limited to physical media such as cartridges, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Rays. Using rented entertainment content was a more economical way to consume it, without having to pay the full price for that product. With the advent of live broadcasting, rental companies gradually disappeared from the daily lives of people, who succumbed to the practicality and convenience of the digital age.

And since the arrival of game streaming services in Brazil in 2021, the gaming market may be heading towards this same movement. Bringing electronic games online with high-quality and responsive controls facilitates the connection of all kinds of gamers, even those less experienced or familiar with this universe. Intuitive and easily accessible, this technology allows users to play online, without having to download or worry about storage, all directly from the cloud. Plus, streaming platform partnerships with the biggest players in the industry, like Xbox and Nvidia (already in the country), make the best titles on the market available, including classics and major releases.

Another great feature of game streaming is its availability. Since it is 100% online, the user can access it from any electronic device such as smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs, using only a Bluetooth joystick. You do not have to be tied to the catalog of the service you are subscribing to, as there are platforms that allow you to purchase the game to avoid concerns such as updating the catalog which may remove a title you have been enjoying. Not to mention the low amount invested to play, as a smart TV, for example, is enough to enjoy your favorite games. The market still has TVs that combine other hardware to enhance the player experience, such as mirroring a thumbnail on a tablet or external monitor to make the field of view cleaner, built-in crosshairs for more precise gameplay in shooters, and even a special menu for tracking frame rate and other performance information that Controllers don’t usually display them.

The success of these services is another point of interest, as there are already 31.7 million paid users in the world, who together have spent about $2.4 billion. By 2025, metrics are expected to grow to 86.9 million paid users, $8.2 billion, according to an estimate by the Newzoo Institute in 2022. And when we compare the projected growth between consoles and streaming, the difference is also telling, according to data from domestic intelligence In a survey conducted with industry professionals. The result shows that streaming is the format with the highest growth trend until 2025 (about 40%), while consoles have a forecast of only 10%.

Economy, practicality and accessibility are the three main elements of game broadcasting which, when combined, could be the main responsible for the end of another tradition that completes half a century of existence.
